Tribal Dice (started as Eidolon Dice) is a unique solitaire and interactive multiplayer game where players use eight dice with eight sides in various colors. The dice represent tribal spirits that must be restored in an ancient ritual to save the tribe and determine the new chieftain.

MY ROLE

I worked on this project in 2010 for 5 months and collaborated with the other three team members. I was responsible for the UI and Visual design of the iOS app. I continued working up until the app was launched providing the developer with all the specs and guidelines required for implementation.

THE CHALLENGE

  1. Building a gaming app to target the right audience
  2. Getting the game noticed

GOALS

  1. To create a unique gameplay experience
  2. To entertain and to make the working life more enjoyable
  3. To stimulate the brain

LOW-FIDELITY AND HIGH-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

I joined the project during the Design phase. I created frameworks and prototypes to share the vision and design principles.

STYLE GUIDE

To maintain the visual consistency of the mobile app, I developed a style guide to use as a resource for visual styles and UI components.

OUTCOME

THE CHALLENGE

The project wasn’t set up to track the usage and engagement metrics or conduct usability studies. Instead, we conducted a heuristic evaluation amongst stakeholders and team members.

POSSIBLE OBSTACLES

  1. Limited gameplay
  2. The game is not engaging enough
  3. Poor marketing
  4. The app is difficult to get: not many platforms support it

WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY

The app was built in 2010. The gaming industry, experience, and mobile design have changed a lot since then, not to mention user expectations. In 2010, I did what I was hired for:

  1. Created wireframes and mockups
  2. Turned the initial wireframes and mockups to UI images
  3. Defined the final theme, specs, and guidelines required for implementation

Now, in addition to all the above, I would spend extra time on research, usability testing, and improvements:

  1. User and market research to anticipate what user needs and be one step ahead
  2. Usability testing to ensure any potential issues are highlighted and fixed before the app is launched
  3. Improvements to reduce cognitive load and to make the overall experience intuitive and positive
